Is Your Cargo Tank in Need of Inspection? Here's How to Know.

DOT Testing and HAZMAT tank compliance are necessary elements of safe legal operation for every cargo tank owner-operator and fleet manager. But how do you know when it’s time for inspection? Tell-tale signs may indicate that you’ll need to have your tanker inspected before the required periodic test date.

Be on the lookout for:

• Visible signs of damage such as leaks, corrosion, cuts, dents, or gouges
• Mechanical failures including malfunctioning valves, work gaskets, or faulty manhole covers
• Loose or unstable mounting hardware or tank securing devices
• Illegible or missing tank markings

Of course, if a year or more has passed since you’ve been transporting HAZMAT materials, then it’s time for inspection.

Emergency shutdown systems, spill control equipment, and proper warning placards and labels are all necessary components of hazmat compliance.

A pre-trip inspection can reveal whether your cargo tank truck is ready for the road. Conduct a visual inspection to look for any damage from wear and tear. Check for leaks. Then, verify safety systems and look for accurate gauge readings. Review all paperwork to ensure that it’s up-to-date, including permits and load documentation.

Even if everything looks good-to-go, stay on top of required tank truck inspections for regulatory compliance and for the longevity of your vehicles. Meeting DOT testing and hazmat tank compliance prevents spills, accidents, and mechanical mishaps. Compliancy extends the life of your cargo tanks while avoiding expensive fines for law violations.

Certified cargo tank inspections need to be executed at regular intervals. The External Visual Test (V), Leakage Test (K), the CARB Vapor Tightness Test (Method 27), and the FMCSA/DOT Overall Tank and Vehicle Compliance Inspection all must be performed annually. An Internal Visual Inspection (I) and Tank Pressure Test (P) must be performed every one to five years. The Tank Thickness Test (T) is to be performed every other year.
