With 2025 compliance deadlines now in effect, ensuring your vehicles meet testing and reporting standards is critical for keeping your fleet road-ready and avoiding costly penalties or downtime. Let’s break down what you need to know to stay compliant this year.
Nearly all diesel and alternative-fuel heavy-duty vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 14,000 pounds operating in California must meet Clean Truck Check requirements. This applies to commercial trucks and fleets, motorhomes, agricultural vehicles and equipment, and even out-of-state trucks operating on California highways.
To remain compliant, ensure all vehicles in your fleet are registered in the Clean Truck Check Vehicle Inspection System (CTC-VIS) and that all required compliance fees are paid. Emissions testing is now mandatory, and all vehicles with compliance deadlines in 2025 and beyond must pass a certified emissions test and submit results along with their annual fee before the deadline.
Emissions compliance testing must be conducted by a CARB-certified professional. Successful test results can be submitted 90 days before a vehicle’s compliance deadline, providing ample time to address any required repairs.
Failing to meet Clean Truck Check requirements can result in DMV registration holds, monetary fines, and other enforcement actions that could disrupt your operations.
Most cargo tankers fall into a semi-annual schedule of testing: California-registered vehicles have their deadlines set according to when their DMV registrations expire, and then the follow-up deadline is within six months of that date. For vehicles with non-California registration dates, their compliance deadlines are based on the last digit of their VIN numbers.
Agricultural vehicles have annual emissions testing requirements instead of semi-annual requirements.
