Motorhome Owners: How to Comply With the California Air Resources Board

All diesel motorhomes and RVs, whether they are for personal or commercial use, are under the watchful eye of the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The cost of not following their rules of the road? Potential fines and DMV registration holds.

Don’t let your motorhome get sidelined—Follow these Diesel Motorhome Clean Truck Check Requirements:

  • Emissions testing began January 1, 2025, and must be completed up to 90 days before your vehicle’s compliance deadline to allow time to make any necessary repairs.
  • Refer to the instructions at the online Clean Truck Check Vehicle Inspection System (CTC-VIS), where you must report your vehicle and make annual compliance fee payments. Your specific deadlines, the same as your DMV registration due date, appear in your CTC-VIS account.
  • Have your motorhome's emissions tested by a credentialed tester and submit the passing compliance test results before your vehicle’s due date. Non-commercial motorhomes must follow Annual Compliance Requirements, and commercial motorhomes must follow the Semi-Annual Compliance Requirements.

How do you know if your motorhome needs to comply?

Check the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), usually listed on the inside of the vehicle’s door or on the door jamb. If it’s over 14,000 lbs, your vehicle does not run on regular gasoline, and it is registered in California, CARB’s rules apply to you!
